CHARACTER LIST

Jenny – thirties, a primary school teacher

Lauren – late thirties, Californian, a psychotherapist

Ben – forties, London accent, a builder

Sam – late thirties, a physics professor and writer

PC Miller, female

PC Stirling, male

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Jenny – mother to a newborn child and wife of Sam. Whilst her husband has been away, Jenny has been juggling home renovations with looking after Phoebe. She has encountered supernatural activity in the home very recently and is very shaken by this. Throughout the play, she appears tired and irritable but still putting on a smile for the dinner party. Her stresses often mean she clashes with Sam, but she still loves him, nonetheless.

Accent – neutral Southern British

Lauren – A friend of Sam’s from University, she is bubbly and outgoing but cannot help but analyse everyone she meets whether she knows she’s doing it or not. Like many Americans, she is loud but certainly not obnoxious and can still read a room even when a little bit drunk. She is seeing Ben but this relationship appears quite casual.

Accent – Californian or Generic American

Ben – slightly older than others but his maturity is questionable. He is a salt of the earth kind of guy, proud of his working-class roots with strong opinions about the supernatural. He clashes with Sam because of this and grows quite defensive later on. Although he can come across as a bit slow at times, he is an affable character who genuinely means well.

Accent – Cockney or Thames Estuary

Sam – father of a newborn child and husband of Jenny. He has just returned from a trip to one of the Channel Islands, Sark. He is intelligent but this can often come across as him being a smart aleck. Because of this, he clashes with everyone else at the dinner party, particularly when the topic of ghosts is brought up. He has confidence but is shaken throughout the evening by a multitude of things, peeling away his confident exterior.

Accent – Slight RP/Posh British

PC Miller and PC Stirling – two Metropolitan police officers who turn up at the end of the play. Professional and polite, as is to be expected. Their roles, although minor, are important to the story. They are listed as male and female, but their gender has no bearing on the story, and this can be changed depending on who auditions. A good role for those who would like to be involved but not yet comfortable with taking on a leading role.

AUDITIONS

For your audition, please prepare a monologue of your choice that lasts for no longer than two minutes. If the character you are auditioning for has a listed accent, please recite your monologue in that accent. For example, actors auditioning for the role of Lauren should perform an American accent.

The monologue you perform is completely your choice. However, it would be advantageous to pick a monologue that you feel captures the character that you are auditioning for. Those auditioning for the police officers should also consider how their monologue reflects their character.

If you are auditioning for more than one character, you are welcome to use the same monologue again or choose a different one.

When performing your monologue, you are free to either do it standing up or sat down. A chair will be provided if needed.

Monologues will be performed in front of other actors as well as the creative team.

SCENES

After the solo auditions, we will begin running the following scenes to see how well you work with other actors and assess chemistry. Actors auditioning for the police officers may take part in these scenes even if they are not wanting to go for one of the four main parts. If you really don’t want to do this, just let one of the production team know at the start.

Jenny and Sam – pages 21 and 22

Jenny and Lauren – pages 15 and 16

Ben and Lauren – pages 52 and 53 (Jenny and Sam lines removed)

Ben – pages 67 and 68 (Other character lines removed)

Lauren – pages 95 and 96 (with Sam)

These excerpts have been chosen so that the creative team can see how you interact with other actors on stage. You may use a script for this segment, but you are more than welcome to memorise the lines beforehand. A rudimentary stage will be set up in the audition room for you to use. It is highly recommended that you use the space available to you and to move around it, showing your understanding of stagecraft.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

2:22 will take place on a static set. There are no major scene changes and all the action occurs in the space as it is. There will be some moving parts for which actors may be expected to assist with (for example, moving tables and props) but this is not strenuous activity.

The production will put a large emphasis on sound and lighting – there will be times when actors are on stage and in the dark, so please be mindful of this when auditioning.

On behalf of the creative team, thank you for your interest in BMCDS’ production of 2:22 A GHOST STORY! We hope to see lots of you at the audition!
